Skills, knowledge and understanding Example
Adults should be taught to:

1 . possess a limited, meaningful sight vocabulary of words, signs and symbols Social sight vocabulary.

understand that written words carry meaning and that adults will already be familiar with many of the words they will meet in print, from their experience of spoken language
understand that some words occur in texts more frequently than others and recognise key high-frequency words
understand that there are words which are key personal words for them and their situation, identify these words and learn to recognise them
know and apply some techniques for recognising words on sight: length, shape, initial letter combinations, association with other words

Sample activities
Highlight their own name/street/town/ city in a list.
Draw an outline around personal key words to identify word shape and trace with their finger.
Highlight key words from their personal list in their own composition which someone else has written down.
Match personal key words by playing 'Snap'.
Highlight the days of the week in familiar material such as a newspaper, TV listings.
Find ways of remembering common words, e.g. pinning them up at home.
Use a text-to-speech program to check accurate reading of key vocabulary list, stored in a Word document.
